Apprentice Instructor

Spinnaker Sailing Club are looking to employ an Apprentice Instructor to work as part of our team delivering watersports to individuals, families and schools. We provide training courses, long term coaching programmes and support regular activity such as racing and social functions.

Spinnaker Sailing Club is a busy, lake based sailing club working with individual members, families and local schools. We have a strong reputation nationally for our grassroots sailing programmes and as a leading venue for Dinghy Team Racing.

We offer a range of watersports including dinghy sailing, kayaking, stand up paddleboarding, powerboating and windsurfing. As an RYA Recognised Training Centre we deliver tuition and coaching from beginner to national level racer. In addition to our instructor led training activities we have a busy programme of racing and social events for our members and visitors to participate in.

This initial role will be as an assistant instructor, working to support our full time team of instructors and coaches. Training will be given on the job to develop you to being able to work as an independent instructor, leading activities with groups. In addition to supporting instructor led activities you will work within the team to support racing activities, maintain our fleet of more than 50 craft, and support the day to day operation of the club.

Through your time with us you will have the opportunity to achieve the following qualifications:

  • RYA Dinghy Instructor
  • RYA Safety Boat Driver
  • British Canoeing Paddlesport Instructor
  • Level 3 Outdoor Activity Instructor

As well as gaining experience of working in a busy watersports club supporting racing, social events and other activities.

As part of the overall employment package use of Spinnaker Sailing Club’s equipment and facilities is provided when off duty. You will be able and encouraged to join in with activities such as racing and club social functions.

Uniform and suitable personal afloat equipment will be provided as part of the package.

Day to Day Duties:

  • Delivery of dinghy sailing and paddlesport instruction
  • Support of dinghy racing and social activities inc. provision of safety cover
  • Supporting the Boatswain with maintenance of equipment and the site
  • Other duties as necessary and appropriate to the level of employee

Skills and qualifications:

Essential:

  • A minimum of GCSE grade D/3 in functional skills in Maths and English.
  • Experience of watersports e.g. dinghy sailing, paddleboarding etc
  • Water confident and capable of swimming in light clothing

Desirable:

  • RYA Sailing Certificate
  • British Canoeing Award
  • RYA Powerboat Certificate
  • Experience of outdoor groups such as Scouts, Cadet Forces etc
  • Experience of dinghy racing

 

Future Prospects

Employment within the leisure sailing industry either as an instructor/coach or in other supporting roles such as boatswain.

Please note: All employees of Spinnaker Sailing Club have to make their own way to work. Due to the location on the edge of the New Forest public transport links are limited.

Essential Details:

Salary Details: £6.40 per hour

Working Hours: 30 hours per week in November, December, January, February and March. 37.5 Hours per week all other months.
