Apprentice Outdoor Activities Instructor
Lewisham Scouts are seeking to appoint someone who has the aptitude and ability to undertake an apprentice programme of on and off the job training and gain experience as an Apprentice Activity Instructor at its outdoor centre – Frylands Wood.
You will learn and develop the necessary skills and experience to assist in the delivery of safe, high quality outdoor education & training courses for children, young people & adults, whilst working towards a Level 3 Outdoor Activity Instructor qualification and appropriate technical certificates including National Governing Body awards.
In addition to working with groups in the outdoors, you will contribute to the daily duties of a residential centre including a rota of evenings and weekends.

Day to Day Duties:
- Develop skills in activity leadership & assume responsibility for group supervision to run fun, safe & exciting sessions
- Assist with the maintenance, preparation, organisation & issuing of equipment.
- Assist in the daily site duties including cleaning & maintenance
- Undertake evening & weekend duties on a rota basis, assisting the supervision of groups & provision of activities
- Assist in ensuring that a safe environment exists for all visitors to the Centre
- Undertake other reasonable duties as may be required by the Centre Manager
- Contribute to welcoming & supportive ethos, working flexibly when necessary to support colleagues
- The post holder must promote & safeguard the welfare of the children & young people that they are responsible for or encounter
Skills and qualifications:
Essential
- Level 1 (GCSE Grade D / 3 or above) in Functional Skills Maths and English.
- Good communication skills, both orally and in writing
- Ability to deliver activities to our broad range of customers
- An ability to provide first-class customer service
- Ability to work as part of a team
- A positive outlook
- Flexibility
- Willingness to work independently
- Being helpful & cooperative with others
- You will enjoy meeting new people & have a commitment to self-development
Desirable
- Competent IT skills, in particular the Microsoft Office suite
- Have evidence of a good standard of general education including English Language and Maths GCSEs or equivalent level
Future Prospects
Fixed term 18-month contract, March 2025 to June 2026 and we cannot guarantee a role will be available at the end of this contract.
However, previous Apprentices have filled vacant instructor posts in the past and this is a great gateway to the many wonderful opportunities in the outdoor education industry which includes in the UK & abroad.

Essential Details:
Salary Details: £271.80 per week
Working Hours: 36 hours per week including some evenings & weekends
Open to under 18s: No
Live in position: No but on-site accommodation available for short-term stays during busy work patterns. It can not be a full-time home.
